The Writing of the Blue Topaz
From Ecclesia Gnostica Universalis
One day in 1986, I was listening to Jethro Tull's 1984 album, Under Wraps. I had also been working on a ritual which would summarize the knowledge which I had gained from having performed my HGA working using Liber Samekh from the Spring Equinox to the Fall Equinox of 1985.
I had the general form of the ritual, but was frustrated finishing some of the details to my satisfaction. In particular, I was undecided whether to use Nu and Had or Nuit and Hadit. Another thing that was bothering me was the names to use for the four guardians of the quarters. I knew that I wanted to use Heru-Mentu and Heru-Khonsu for the south (right) and north (left) quarters respectively. I also knew that I wanted to use Heru-Machis in one quarter and Heru-Ra-Ha in the center. But I still needed a fourth guardian.
Since I was getting nowhere with my conscious effort, I decided to distract myself with some gematria. The song playing at that moment was Radio Free Moscow. Some deep background is needed at this point. This all took place during the Reagan administration, and I was very concerned about Reagan's aggravation of the cold war by calling the USSR "the evil empire." Even though the cold war had been going on for decades, there was still a deep underlying fear of nuclear war in the consciousness of the man on the street. I had also been deeply concerned with the underlying duality of magickal practice, a subject that I wrote about somewhat later in my essay Banishing, Dualism, and the World. I had also recently been initiated into the International Nath Order and was studying the Shiva Sutras and the non-dual aspects of Shaivism.
Anyway, enough background. As I said, I decided to distract myself by doing gematria on the phrase Radio Free Moscow. I thought it would be cool to somehow encode it into the ritual with the intent of bringing down the Berlin Wall and putting an end to the manifestation of the antagonistic dualism in the world by freeing Moscow from communism. This was already implicit in my decision to use the word Nubti in the ritual.
Amazingly, doing gematria on the phrase led me to resolve the issue of which forms of Nu and Had to use. Using the forms just mentioned allowed me to encode the phrase Radio Free Moscow into the ritual. Then I stood up to perform the ritual, and the name Heru-Amoun spontaneously flowed from my lips in the western quarter. The ritual was complete.
This is the previously undisclosed history of the writing of the ritual known as The Blue Topaz. While it had not been constructed with any eye to qabalistic values, subsequent qabalistic analysis revealed absolutely amazing correlations. This analysis can be found in my An Analysis of the Blue Topaz. I went on to publish the ritual and analysis in Early Warning, the journal of Rising Aeon Camp, the O.T.O. body in Seattle at that time.
I left Seattle shortly after that and watched in amazement as my intent came to pass in the world.
